Whole Organism Cloning

Process of Whole Organisim Cloning

Picture

To fully clone an organism,  scientists use a method called "somatic cell nuclear transfer". This is where the nucleus from a somatic cell is taken out using a sharp pipette and is implanted into an empty, unfertilized egg. This egg has all the cellular mechanisms necessary to produce an embryo. The process of cell division is then started by an electric shock or by some chemical treatment and is then left in a test tube until it develops into an early-stage embryo. The cells developed are then implanted into a surrogate mother for it to continue to grow into a fetus naturally. Once the female gives birth to the animal, it will have the exact same genetic make-up as the original somatic cell.
